In honor of the Giants making it to the big game, I thought I'd share this fun map depicting how the lovely folks from New York City view the good ole US of A. Being from Texas, and having lived in NYC for 5 years, I can attest to the fact that this map is rather accurate.

And in all honestly, I started to somewhat assimilate to this view of our lovely country - well, except for Texas, of course! After all, we (Texas) were once our OWN country (read: we got LOTS of state pride, and do not include ourselves in "The South"). Hope this gives you a good chuckle! Happy Friday!

Golden Globes 2012 Recap

The Golden Globes red carpet is always the best... maybe a close 2nd to the Met Gala. Either way, this is an event where celebrities take chances. Sometimes it works... and sometimes it doesn't. Here are some examples of each, in my opinion.

So, I've been working on my wedding album with my photographer all week, and it's made really start to reminisce...

Then, the thought of weddings made me think of these amazing wedding photos I saw a couple weeks ago! The below photos are of David Lauren's (son of Ralph Lauren) wedding to Lauren Bush (granddaughter to President Bush Sr.). The ceremony and reception took place at the Lauren Family's Double RL Ranch in Colorado (relatively close to where we got married).

Music Mondays | Ben Howard

Last week, I got a great music recommendation from my friend Kristin that I would love to share! His name is Ben Howard, and his album Every Kingdom is rather addictive. For me, he falls somewhere in between Bon Iver and Fleet Foxes. Howard uses quick tempo-ed lyrics against soft acoustic riffs to create a very calming, yet interesting, sound.

We've been ordering items lately for our new living room. One, in particular, was the below Gavin Leather Ottoman from Mitchell Gold+Bob Williams. This fashionable and well-made furniture brand had a lovely sale on Gilt.com. We were able to grab this beauty at a third of the retail price!

We'll also be able to place these wonderful wooden trays, which we received as wedding gifts, on top to make it double as the coffee table.

Now, I just need to find some side tables. Oh, and lamps - because there's no overhead lighting in the living room. Gotta love houses from 1925! Stay tuned for the finished room sometime in December (hopefully!)...

Music Mondays | The Head and The Heart

Heard this group for the first time last week, and I really enjoy their melodic sound. The Head and The Heart, despite what might be a semi-corny band name, have put out a really enjoyable album with bits of piano and bluegrass thrown in. It's become a quick favorite!

I discovered Mayer Hawthorne a week or two ago. Maybe I'm a little behind the curve on this one, but his albums are a blast! I thoroughly enjoy his brand new album How Do You Do, as well as his 2009 album A Strange Arrangement.

He's a nice mix of soul without being to serious in his lyrics. His music will take you back, just like this video:

Berry Lipstick

So, I finally took the plunge this weekend, and I purchased some berry lipstick for Fall. I ended up with Dior's Hypnotic Red, which is a deep eggplant color.

Here's a fun photo of my friend Amanda and me with the new shade on! It's a little scary at first, but I love the look of it. Lipstick might be the new eyeshadow, dare I say.

Now that I've made the transition out of the music industry, I still need to keep myself engaged and up-to-speed on new music. Hence... "Music Mondays." A totally cliche name, but whatever. It gets the point across. I've done plenty of music posts here, and now it's time for consistency.

First up, Lana Del Rey. I can't get away from friend recommendations and blog reviews about her current singles. Looks like she's had a somewhat perfect storm of buzz and opportunity. Here's her new video for her song 'Blue Jeans' - and rumor is there should be a whole album of this chick by January!

So, since moving into the new house, we've been carefully deciding how we want to "attack" (for lack of a better word) each room. We are starting with the master bedroom - it's this huge attic space that's been redone beautifully. Well, despite the Toile wallpaper overload, it's been done beautifully ;).

This weekend, we purchased the Asher Bed from Crate and Barrel in a KING size. Yes, a King! From what I hear, there's no turning back....

So, now that we are going to have a new King bed and mattress, I had to go on a quest for proper bedding. I'm such a stickler for bedding.... I think it's sometimes the hardest thing to make a decision on. It's a rather big investment (for the good stuff), and you need to love it. Here are a few I was looking at:

I was in lovely San Francisco all last week for work. I definitely got to see many different parts of the city thanks to my local friends and coworkers who gave me rides everywhere!

The first night I was there, I poked around downtown Burlingame - my home base for the week. I found this great shop with unique (but affordable) clothing called Therapy. They have several locations, so you should check them out if you're in Cali.

The next night, I went to a Giants game. I made it a point to ride The Guzzler (a Coca-Cola slide usually reserved for children). It was totally worth it! They also had a Fist Pump Cam that I thought was pretty genius. Everyone got really into it! Please notice the brilliant graphic...

I had the wonderful chance to hang out in beautiful Sausalito! We had the most delicious meal at Fish, a seafood restaurant right on the water dedicated to serving sustainable fish. The crab roll was absolutely splendid. It melted in my mouth... like butta'.

After spending the afternoon in Sausalito, I spent my evening in the Marina District. There was some great shopping - including a whole Benefit store. A WHOLE STORE of the stuff!! If you know me, you know my love for Benetint (see here and here). I stopped in and fell in love with their new lipstick shade for Fall called No Competition. It's a nice berry color, but not toooo dark that it scares me.

After I finished my shopping, I met a dear old friend and her lovely family at a taco place in the area called Mamacita . It was wonderful! I had the fish tacos (I couldn't get enough seafood on this trip), and my friend raved about her carne asada tacos. Here's a cute pic her husband took of us outside the restaurant (notice all the shopping bags I'm holding. Oopsies!).

All in all, it was a fun trip! It reminded me how much I love true urban life. Can't wait for the next time I'm back in this blissfully foggy metropolis - hopefully, I can bring the hubby along (he was super jealous of all the amazing asian food and seafood I was having). There's just so much more to do and see! Alcatraz, anyone?!

Operation Ombre Hair: Accomplished.

So, remember when I told you I was going to try the Ombre hair trend? Well, this past Saturday - I went for it! And I'm very happy with the results. Jane, my wonderful stylist at Belle Epoque, ended up using 4 different shades of red throughout my hair to create this effect. It took a few hours, but was totally worth it. My guess is it will be pretty easy to upkeep too! I mean, after all, the whole look is kinda like you're highlights are all grown out.... ;).

Jones Street Station

If I've ever told you about music that I love, these guys always make it into my permanent list. I accidentally stumbled upon Jones Street Station when I first moved to NYC (they were called Jones Street Boys back then, if you are interested in a little back catalogue). They serendipitously played a set after a friend of mine at the Knitting Factory (when it used to be in Tribeca). They are so energetic and can carry off a sweet harmony or two. One of the band members even has a harmonica belt! That's right... a belt full of harmonicas in different keys. I never knew such a thing even existed!

Today, this Brooklyn bluegrass band has released their music video for "The Understanding." In my opinion, they've definitely captured a part of the New York spirit in this video. It makes me want to move back. Like, now. I hope you enjoy it as much as I do!!

Unique Bachelorette Gifts

My new cousin-in-law asked me a couple of weeks ago for some bachelorette gifts ideas that weren't the same-ole thing you see at every shower. Having just been a bachelorette myself AND a maid of honor, I felt pretty confident in answering this question. So, I decided to put all of my suggestions into this blog entry. Who doesn't love a fun gift guide?! You could probably take most of these ideas and adjust for all different occasions too!

#1 The first idea I can take no credit for - a few years ago, my friend Pam got our other friend Meagan an embroidered velour track suit with her new last name on it - "Mrs. Hamblen." We all thought it was a genius idea, so when Pam got married this last April - of course, Meagan got her one. I think it's such a great gift - especially if the couple is taking their honeymoon right after the wedding because it makes for the perfect plane outfit! Plus, you can personalize the colors to something you know your friend would love.

#2 There are tons of cute things over at Kate Spade's Wedding Belles site. My favorites are these little necklaces that a bride could wear for showers, the honeymoon, and even after they are married. I, personally, feel like someone would get more wear out of the "mrs." necklace, but the "i do" one is pretty damn cute too! Mrs. Spade also has similar style necklaces that are not wedding-related for all of your gift giving needs :). And at $78 each, they sure don't break the bank.

#3 The next idea is a gift I wanted to buy my best friend Pam for her bachelorette party, but she beat me to it! Dagnabit! And she also got me one too! So, what was this fabulous idea we both had for each other? A personalized hanger for your bachelorette's wedding dress. Here's a photo of Pam's...

#4 One thing I was actually able to get Pam for her bachelorette weekend in NOLA was this adorable little bag with the saying "For Like Ever" on it. It also comes in poster form, which is totally amazing as well. She was able to use the bag on her wedding day to carry all her stuff around in too!

Let me know if you have any fun gift ideas you've used in the past. There are plenty of more weddings (and bachelorette parties) in my future!

Enzyme Peel?

Yes, enzyme peel. I was at Sephora the other day picking up a new bottle of Benetint, when the saleswoman offered me a free sample of AmorePacific's Treatment Enzyme Peel. She told me it would remove about 5 or 6 layers of dead skin. Say what?! It's just a powder that you mix with a little bit of water. Then, you rub on your face for about 45 seconds. Easy peasy.

And um, it's AMAZING. My skin felt tremendously soft, and I could see an immediate difference after I used it. Also, the product didn't feel the least bit abrasive like a lot of "peels" do. So, needless to say, their little sampling ploy worked for me! It looks like the sample bottle will last me a while (you only have to use about a dime size of powder for each use). So, $60 for the full size bottle sounds like a steal!

Happy Friday! I'm going to see The Help this weekend. SO EXCITED.

Ombre Hair Trend

I have an appointment at the end of this month to have my hair color blocked in an ombre effect. Here's how it usually looks when people do this type of dye job:

I don't think i could pull off the red to blonde one, but it looks awesome. Maybe I'll get the guts to do that next Summer... might be a little to light for Fall, anyways. I've dyed my hair many colors, but this is something completely new and different. I'm sure it will only trend a year or two more, so I need to hop to it!

This weekend, I am bound and determined to finish reading The Help by Kathryn Stockett. I actually got hooked by listening to the audiobook on our way home from the wedding in Colorado. I highly recommend it if you have any long trips in your future!

You've probably already heard of this book, and you probably already know there's a movie coming out in August too. But if you didn't here's the trailer! I absolutely adore Emma Stone.

Diament Designs

I wanted to tell y'all about Diament Designs jewelry today. It's super affordable and unique! Here are a few of my current favorites:

If you're in NYC, they carry this line at my friend's store in Park Slope - Eponomy. And if you haven't checked out Eponomy before, I highly suggest you do so - if for no other reason than to meet the owner's lovely french bulldog Bianca!

Wedding Sneak Peek

So, we got back from our wedding last week. No honeymoon just yet - we'll most likely go to Croatia next summer, so don't feel too bad for us ;). We had such a great time seeing all of our closest friends and family in the same beautiful place. If it works for your families, I can confirm that a destination wedding is definitely the way to go! Hands down! We were able to have so much fun and spend quality time with the majority of our guests. It made the actual wedding day that much more spectacular and memorable.

My photographer Alison White posted this photo to her facebook site, so I thought I'd share...

And yes, I wore a birdcage veil. I absolutely loved the vintage look of it! But instead of buying one of those expensive ones on Etsy, I found a really affordable one here. I used those savings to buy the brand new Chanel makeup that I'm wearing in this photo. I went the "peach and spices" route, even though I was initially thinking dramatic red lips. The reason I changed my mind is that I just didn't look enough like myself with the super red lips and dark shadow. I've decided that look is better for a night out, rather than my wedding day (but if you feel comfortable in it for your wedding, please go for it! I'm just a whimp). Regardless of color, I ended up being very pleased with how my "face" lasted throughout the night. Go Chanel!

Benefit has announced that it will be coming out with a mango tinted version of one of my favorite products - Benetint. This one will be called Chachatint, and it looks perfect for summer! If you haven't heard me rave about this product before... I love it because you can use it on cheeks AND lips. It is also so long-lasting, especially on dewy summer skin!

NYC on a Wednesday night...

This little event was kind of a ritual when I lived in NYC. So, if you are living in NYC or visiting on a Wednesday, you need to experience the bluegrass jam at the Grisly Pear. Basically, every Wednesday night around 9:30, you can grab a drink at this little bar in the village and listen to an acoustic jam of anywhere from 15 - 30 bluegrass musicians. They play all the bluegrass standards - some you probably know and some you don't.

War dogs.

This is not normal content for my blog, but I found this remarkable photo essay on war dogs to be a unique take on war in the Middle East. Also, my puppy is a Belgian Malinois mix - which is one of the breeds often used for this type of training. It's so interesting to me that he could be capable of jumping out of plane and into water like in the dog in the photo below...

A few of the photos in the essay exhibit the incredible loyalty and protection shown by our furry friends (or furry children to people like me) in these types of circumstances. I found it very interesting (however, not surprising) to hear that a dog played a big role in finally finding Osama Bin Laden this past weekend. War dogs have proven to have higher success rates when it comes to sniffing out bombs, more so than any technology that's been engineered for such things. Say what you will about the war, but I am definitely proud of these war dogs and their amazing abilities. I'm also very happy to hear about all the protection they are provided in the field, like this puppy...

Hopefully, our soldiers AND our war dogs will make it home again very soon.

The wedding was hidden away in the gorgeous Texas Hill Country at a venue called Camp Lucy. Oscar Fashion 2011

So, like most, I didn't really enjoy the award show. I love love love Colin Firth and The King's Speech, so I'm very glad they took home the top awards. But after the Golden Globes debacle with Ricky Gervais (an award show that I ACTUALLY found entertaining), I'm completely annoyed with how serious Hollywood takes itself. I will say, however, that I do enjoy seeing all the fun dresses! So, let's discuss some of the highlights, both good and bad.

FANCYYYYYY

My absolute favorite from last night was Mila Kunis' Elie Saab dress. It's so creative, yet feminine. I think she looked absolutely beautiful! It made me wish she was nominated for Best Supporting Actress.

There was another lilac number I found intriguing - Cate Blanchett's gown from Givenchy. At first, I thought it was super weird and maybe a bad idea. However, the intricacy of all the bead work and the yellow accent caused the dress to grow on me. I can understand why she picked it - definitely a risk that worked out for the best.

Jennifer Lawrence looked stunning in her red Calvin Klein! The 20 year old maintained her youth by not covering herself in ridiculous amounts of jewelry. So simple, elegant, and sexy too!

Gwenyth Paltrow surprised me when she, too, wore Calvin Klein! She normally goes for a bigger dress, but I loved this sleek silvery shape on her. It goes so well with the modern hairdo she's been sporting lately.

Ok, onto the highlights of horror...

BLAHHHHHH

I honestly don't care that Marisa Tomei's dress was vintage Charles James, it just did not fit her well! Look at all that puckering and pulling. It just didn't look right to me...

Ohhhhh, Melissa Leo - that dress is a f***ing nightmare (I'm referencing her acceptance speech here, so please don't think I'm being crass). I think the shape is really flattering on her, but the gold lame with a super thick lace overlay?? Eeeeeek! Risk gone wrong.

And who lied to Nicole Kidman? I don't know in what era or world this Dior dress would be cute in... I understand the idea behind the structure. But to add all that tacky beading on top of it just ruins the lightness, and makes it look super heavy and frumpy. Not to mention her styling is SO off - what's going on with that 1980s bang?

Well, first of all, I chose some of my favorite rainy kiss photos because I wish it was raining right now.... instead of SNOWING. Springtime, where are you?!?!

I've had a few minor breakdowns this week while trying to figure out where I "fit" in this new city, and I've reminded myself to focus on the good things. It's really hard to find your groove when you move to a new place. I went through similar ups and downs when I moved to NYC after college. My friends and family have shown me so much love and support that I can't help but feel better. Sometimes we get too caught up in what's missing from our lives, whether it's something like having a job, finding a significant other, or even owning a home. But I'm learning not to dwell on the difficulties of life (easier said than done, I know). My mom told me last night that going through these times of immense change will only make me a more compassionate and understanding person, and I think that's a great way to look at it. Nobody's perfect. Sometimes you have to let go and live with reckless abandon. I want love. I want passion. I want kisses in the rain.

So, I hope you have a LOVE-ly weekend! Try not to worry too much about what the future holds, and I'll do the same ;).

It has been SO interesting to see all the intense reactions to Sunday's Grammy Award broadcast. There are mainstream fans who feel like Eminem was robbed for Album of the Year because they have never heard of Arcade Fire. Then there are the less-mainstream fans who actually saw a glimmer of hope when artists like Esperanza Spalding and Arcade Fire went home with big ticket awards.

I have to admit that I am of the latter mindset. And to those more mainstream music fans out there, I hope seeing performances by artists like The Avett Brothers, Janelle Monae, and Mumford & Sons will push you outside the bandwidth of your mix radio station.

And to address the upheaval of opinions about Arcade Fire... first, the main song the band performed is definitely not my personal favorite (and TV sound mixing definitely did NOT help). Also, just because you don't understand the style of their music, doesn't mean they aren't incredibly talented. Let's take modern art, for example... just because you don't understand the meaning of a Rothko painting, does not make his contribution to the art world any less important.

This was the first Grammy Award show in quite a few years that I was actually excited to watch, because somewhat obscure artists that I LOVE were surprisingly nominated. As awards were handed out, I noticed there was a balanced mix of both mainstream acts and more under-the-radar artists that were recognized. The artists with massive sales this year such as Eminem, Lady Antebellum, and Lady Gaga took home plenty of little gold phonographs. And the hipster darlings snagged a few too (much to my delight).

Please don't misunderstand... I own and enjoy pleeeeeenty of popular music. In fact, I find myself with the urge to admit that I, too, have "Bieber Fever" (ultra-hip NYC friends, disown me now). What can I say? The kid's got talent! Do some of his lyrics sound like they were written by a 15 year old? Yes, but they are supposed to. Are some of his hooks catchy as hell?? Of course! I've had "baby baby baby ohhhhh" stuck in my head for a good eight months now. On Sunday night, it was just nice to see that a more diverse group of musicians was represented in the performances and the award recipients.

So, let's hear it for, what some might call, a minor paradigm shift in the music industry this last Sunday night. I just hope it pushes some people to start exploring new music via websites such as Pandora or Last.fm. And if it's local artists you happen to discover... even. better.

Scouting KC : You Say Tomato

In the past week, Garrett and I have been to You Say Tomato THREE times. That's right... we've gone to eat here three times in seven days. We visited YST for the first time, last weekend, as the result of a little internet research. We quickly decided to become regulars after we discovered some delicious food and very welcoming, attentive service.

Now, on to what you really want to know about - what did we EAT?! We both had the Breakfast Casserole, made with egg custard, sausage and mushrooms. Oh, and guess what? It's topped with sausage gravy. I'll just let the photo do the talking....

With our casseroles, we ordered a side of Jalapeno Cheese Grits (only served on the weekends, fyi). And yes, they were as amazing as they sound. When we went back for breakfast during the week, we had a quiche that was absolutely divine and chock full of vegetables. I have a feeling you can't order a bad dish at this place. Every item on the menu at this little unassuming cafe is homemade with local farm fresh ingredients. And the pies! Did I mention the pies?! YST also carries a large assortment of homemade pies - we tasted the rhubarb and the peach-apricot. Delish! I can't get enough of this local joint....

Lord, they be shoppin'!

Since I feel somewhat guilty about all the upcoming expenses for our wedding, I decided the best place for me to exert my shopping energy was in finding great deals on dresses for bridal showers, bachelorette parties, etc. Excellent plan, donchathink?

After eying the ASOS website for months (maybe years) now, I finally decided it was time to order something(s) off this incredibly chic, neverending, online UK store. Don't let the fact that this website is based in the UK scare you... they provide free shipping and returns to the good ole U-S-of-A. Lucky us!

So, you wanna see what I got? Thought so.

Dress #1 : a perfectly draped t-shirt dress for basically $26! I think this is a great little number you can dress up or down. Big accessories and awesome heels for a bridal shower, then flip flops and a chunky knit for a late spring evening...

Dress #2 : I think this one might be my favorite. It has these embellished slits on the sleeves - which I normally wouldn't go for - but it works here.

Dress #3 : Love the long sleeves on this one - I feel like it will help bridge the winter-to-spring wardrobe gap nicely. I can wear it with tights and booties while it's still cold, then nude heels when it starts to warm up.

Dress #4 : I've been wanting a dress with a one shoulder cut like this for a while now. Put on some bright peep toes and I'm ready for some bachelorette festivities!

I'll update everyone once I receive the order and see the quality of the clothes - fingers crossed!

White Turkey Chili

After seeing this post about healthy recipes by Ellie Krieger on Black Eiffel, I decided to try the White Turkey Chili last night. Not only was it delish, it's good for you and your New Year's diet too.

So, here's how it went down...

First, the ingredients:

1 tablespoon olive oil
1 medium onion, diced (about 1 1/2 cups)
2 stalks celery, diced (about 1/2 cup)
3 medium poblano peppers (about 4 ounces each), seeded and white ribs removed, finely diced (about 1 1/2 cups)
1 clove garlic, minced
1 teaspoon ground cumin
1/2 teaspoon ground coriander
1/4 teaspoon cayenne pepper, more to taste
1 pound ground white meat turkey
2 (15.5-ounce) cans white beans such as cannelini, preferably low-sodium, drained and rinsed
4 cups low-sodium chicken broth
3/4 teaspoon dried oregano
1 (15.5-ounce) can hominy, drained and rinsed
Salt
1/4 cup nonfat plain Greek-style yogurt
2 tablespoons chopped fresh cilantro leaves
Lime wedges

To start, I heated the oil, onions, celery, and peppers in a large pot until the veggies softened.

Next, mix in the garlic, cumin, coriander and cayenne pepper. I just guestimated this part - just a few even shakes of each throughout with a little more cumin and a little less cayenne.

Then, add in the ground turkey meat. Make sure to blend it all well as the turkey cooks until it's no longer pink. It should look something like this...

Now, add the white beans (I used one can of navy beans and one can of cannelini for a little variety), broth, and oregano. For the broth, I used chicken bouillon cubes, because I hate having left over broth that ends up just sitting in my fridge for a month. Let this simmer, partially covered, for about 25 mins while stirring occasionally.

Next, add the hominy, salt (I added a little fresh ground pepper too), and cayenne to taste. Let this simmer for another 10 minutes, partially covered.

Then, I served the chili with a spoonful of non-fat greek yogurt (you could probably use sour cream here if you wanted to be a little naughty) and cilantro, as the recipe suggested. I also added a little bit of monterrey jack cheese for fun and flavor!

Scrumptious! And healthy to boot!

So, my new hairdresser at Belle Epoque introduced me to one of my new favorite things - the Curl Stick!

It's basically a cone-shaped curling iron without the clamp. And if you hold it horizontally and wrap your hair around it, it gives you glorious waves similar to those of Miss Taylor Swift.

The curl stick I have is this one by Tigi Pro. I am currently obsessed because this spectacular tool allows me to create tight fashionable waves or those loose beach-y ones. And as my hairdresser said... "Say what you want about Taylor Swift's music; the girl has great hair." Enjoy!

Well, I wish we were having an Indian Summer... we are currently awaiting a good dose of snow here in the Midwest. What I really want to talk about is inserting a little Indian into your Spring wardrobe. Right now, I'm lusting after a few items that fit into this upcoming "Navajo" trend everyone's talking about.

Here's the dress that started it all. An awesomely HOT dress from Nasty Girl. It's currently sold out, but you better believe I'll be keeping my eye out for it to be restocked!

This poncho from Urban Outfitters provides just the right amount of warmth for Spring temperatures. Plus, I'm loving items in white/ivory hues. I dunno, maybe it's the bride in me ;).

I think these flats from Cynthia Vincent would be amazing for Spring and Summer - can't you just picture them paired with skinny jeans and simple gray cardi? Keeping it classy and trendy, all at the same time!

And jewelry... you know I can't forget jewelry. I think it's my favorite category! So many House of Harlow items fit into this Navajo trend. I've been admiring this ring for a while now...

Things I know: Cosmetics.

I've decided to start a series about, as the title suggests, things I know. These are things that I feel highly versed in. I might not be an expert, but I think there are a few areas where my advice can be somewhat valuable. And the size of my makeup bag definitely suggests that cosmetics would be a good place to start. My eyeshadow collections covers the entire spectrum of ROY G BIV and beyond.

First, let's start with cheeks. Because nothing does wonders for your complexion like a little rouge! This and mascara are the two things that can quickly make you look more alive than you might feel (hello, happy hour that went until 3 AM, oops!). The longest lasting product you can buy is Benefit's Benetint - a wonderful cheek and lip tint. Just brush a stripe or two on each cheek, rub it in along your cheekbone and the apples of your cheeks, and you have the perfect amount of natural looking color. Not only does the color last all day, this bottle will also last you for. ever.

Ok, on to the eyes. For mascara - the smaller the brush, the more separation you can get between lashes. Nasty clumps are not the same thing as fullness. Just a small tip ;). So that you don't waste your money, make sure to buy eyeshadows with heavy pigment. I love MAC makeup for this reason. Their eyeshadow pots with loose pigment provide the most options. You can easily use the shadow dry or wet depending on how heavy you want the color.

Lips! One of my new favorites. I can't commit to the super bright stuff yet, but I've been loving Lipstick Queen. Medieval is my favorite because it contains vitamin E, so it doesn't dry up on your lips while you're wearing it. Deep red lips are the perfect Autumn accessory, methinks.

So, I've admired the site Ming Makes Cupcakes for a while now. For my fiance's birthday this past weekend, I decided to make him the cupcake of his choice. He picked "Cupcake 15" - the pumpkin cupcakes with cream cheese frosting. A great choice, if I do say so myself...

1 cup flour

1 tsp soda

Mix flour, baking soda, cinnamon, salt, nutmeg, and cloves. In a separate bowl, mix sugar and eggs. Add oil and mix at medium speed for three minutes. Add flour mixture, and then add pumpkin. Mix at medium speed until well blended. Bake at 350 for 30 minutes, or until toothpick comes out clean.

FROSTING

4 oz. room temp. cream cheese

1/2 stick room temp. butter

1/2 lb confectioner’s sugar

1/2 tsp vanilla

crystallized ginger

Mix ingredients together by hand. Once blended, whip with an electric mixer until fluffy. Top cupcakes and add crystallized ginger if desired.

I'll walk you through how I made them, because I will admit they turned out puuuurty good.

Starting with the cupcakes.

First, I mixed all the dry ingredients together like so...

Then, whipped up the wet ingredients...

Next, I added the flour mixture and the pumpkin to the wet ingredients to create the cupcake batter. When filling up the cupcake sleeves, note that this batter doesn't rise as much as fluffier batter tends to do. So, you can fill the cups up about halfway or a little more. Although, I inadvertently liked the smaller cupcakes I made before I knew this. So, just a heads up so you can choose your preference.

On to everyone's favorite...the FROSTING!

In order to convert the half pound of powdered sugar that the recipe calls for, I added a little less than a cup. This turned out really well! I also ended up doubling the recipe, because you can never have too much frosting! The recipe calls for you to mix by hand before using the electric mixer. I'm guessing this is a really important step; otherwise, the powdered sugar would fly everywhere. Cleaning. Nightmare. Not that I know from experience or anything...

I piped the icing onto the cupcake, then sprinkled a little cinnamon on top (instead of the ginger ;) ). Voila!

We've been in Kansas City for a little over a month, and I'm starting to have a couple favorites.

I am completely smitten with a fantastic lunch spot called The Farmhouse. This little joint in the River Market uses all local ingredients for a menu that changes with the seasons. So far, every meal I've had here has been absolutely delish! There's also an outdoor patio that will be perfect for the upcoming Fall days. I would definitely recommend the pork sliders... like buttah!

And for dessert, we have Glace - artisan ice creams for the refined palate. Last night, I had a combination of Salted Pretzel and Balsamic Strawberry Ice Cream. Garrett chose the infamous Goat Cheese Ice Cream - he's so predictable ;). I had issues deciding because there were so many mouth-watering options to choose from! And a little story for my NYC friends... I totally tried to name drop "Balthazar" while we were at this adorable little ice cream post, and the woman behind the counter looked at me like I was crazy. We're not in NYC anymore, Toto.

Saying yes to the dress...

This past July, my mom and my future mother-in-love came up to NYC to go wedding dress shopping with me before the big move. The first day was wonderful! The second day was frustrating... but I eventually found the perfect dress and I can't wait to wear it next summer. And no, you will not get to see it in this post - so keep dreaming ;). BUT I will show you some of the other beautiful gowns I found on my shopping journey.

I knew I wanted something with texture and a splash of uniqueness that I hadn't seen on anyone else's wedding dress - and I've been to a lot of weddings. Nothing too sparkly. Nothing too poofy. I was a Texas debutante. So, needless to say, been there. Done that. I also didn't want anything too heavy since we were having an outdoor wedding. I was actually leaning towards a short dress, so that I could keep costs down and also get some rad shoes. However, I was definitely one of those brides who ended up with a dress that was NOT expected. But it's beautiful and sophisticated, and I couldn't be happier.

So, here's how it all went down...

We started at Amsale. One of my best friends from college had an Amsale dress that was beautiful. They also carry a whole line of "Little White Dresses" that I wanted to check out. A lot of the dresses (like the ones below) at the showroom were gorgeous - I guess their prices have gone up with their popularity. So, it seemed like a lack of unique design for the price.

Next, we headed down the street to Pronovias, a spanish brand known for its beautiful lace and european style gowns. I found so many dresses that I loved here. And the prices seemed so much more reasonable for what you were getting! Here are a few that I looked at...

Our final stop on Day 1 was a new bridal boutique in the West Village called Lovely Bride. Lovely carries a lot of smaller designers and most of their dresses have a similar aesthetic to what I was looking for. I highly recommend this "lovely" little place.

Day 2 was the more frustrating day. We started out the day at Kleinfeld's - you know, the "Say Yes to the Dress" people. It's a lovely salon... a lovely HUGE salon. That was one of the difficulties here - you really had to rely on your consultant to understand your criteria and pull the right dresses. The problem? My consultant did not understand what I was looking for. Also, I don't think Kleinfeld's really specializes in the style of dress I was looking for. They have so many more options if you are looking for a big glitzy ball gown. Sorry, Pnina Tornai, I'm just not that into you.

The final stop on my wedding dress journey was the brand new J. Crew bridal salon on Madison Avenue. It is a great boutique! They don't quite have their process down yet. And as much as I love the simplicity of the J. Crew dresses, I was looking for something with just a little more panache. But here are a couple that I tried on....

I am going to remember their jewelry though! So unique - it's over-the-top, but in a good way! Check it out...

The next couple days, I slept on everything I saw and eventually came to a decision. It was a tough decision because going into my dress search, I was thinking I would end up in a more casual dress. However, I ended up purchasing a beautiful dress from Pronovias that is more on the fancy side. It will still fit in our rustic mountain theme with its delicate, vintage details. And I'm so excited to marry the love of my life in this dress!

Sorry friends for being so MIA last month! I went on vacation, had visitors in BK, and moved halfway across the country to Kansas City. I promise to return in full force now that we've settled in here. And I'll catch you up on the past month bit by bit. Here goes..

I've decided to share the Southern road trip we took in July by illustrating our many local food destinations.

First, in Virginia Beach, we found a lovely fish taco spot called Pelon's Baja Grill. If you ever find yourself in the VA Beach/Norfolk area, you must hit up this little surfer joint just off the boardwalk! The fish tacos were to die for - as were the shrimp tacos, the homemade salsa, and the guacamole. G and I also got to share this lovely dining experience with my old NYC friend, Lauren, who know lives in the area. She's also 20 weeks pregnant with a precious baby girl! But, of course, you can't even tell in this photo...

Next, we made a pit stop on the road at the famed COOK OUT! Garrett had told me stories of this place. He told me about how everything you order here tastes just like your dad just pulled it off the grill. And man, oh man, was he right. Not only can you get a made-to-order burger, you can also get a pretty damn good shake. Just choose from the 40 umpteen million flavors! Sadly Cook Out can only be found in North Carolina - good thing we are going back there for Alex and Barry's wedding in August!

When we finally reached Asheville, NC - which is gorgeous, btw - we found a lovely Mexican/Caribbean place called Salsa's. Have you ever had a curry sauce with your guacamole? Well, let me just assure you that it's pretty delish. Also, the pineapple margaritas weren't so bad either!

The following morning, we happened upon a wonderful brunch spot in Asheville called Mayfel's. Crab Benedict with about a pound of butter in it? Yes, please.

I think that about sums up the highlights of our vacation food. We were pretty successful!

Talk about a GREAT idea.

My fiancé and I first noticed a random bright orange piano in the park near our apartment last night. On top of the piano it said, "Play me, I'm yours." Hmmmm, that's intriguing.

Then, on my way to work this morning, I saw another piano in Times Square with the same phrase.

Well, I guess I'm going to have to look into this....

As it turns out, the non-profit Sing for Hope, an arts education and outreach organization, has put 60 of these puppies all over the city. All the pianos were donated, then fixed up and decorated by Sing for Hope. The goal of this two week project is to create a public space for music in the city. Here's the PSA from Sing for Hope...

Enjoy giving those keys a good tickle.

Midwest here we come! Garrett and I will be making the big move out of Brooklyn later this summer. We'll be heading to... (drum roll, please)... KANSAS CITY! Garrett was accepted into the History PhD program at University of Kansas and will be starting full-time this Fall. So - Rock, Chalk, Jay... Nope, sorry. Can't do it. The Texas Longhorn inside me runs far too deep. But I am very excited for our new adventure! As sad as we are to leave Brooklyn, it also feels like time to move on.

I've visited Kansas City a few times, and the place definitely did surprise me! Here are some lovely photos of our soon-to-be new home:

The World Cup is upon us!

I'm so excited about experiencing my first World Cup where I actually understand more about the game, and I actually know who some of the players are (thanks, G). New York is shaping up to be a great place to watch the games... Here are few cool "spaces" in the city to watch the 2010 Copa Mundial!

#1 - Puma City - you can go down to the South Street Seaport to catch some of the games, among many other activities, at this "city" built just for the World Cup.

#2 - Men with Balls - visit this art exhibit that will be combining the art of soccer along with a space for screening some of the high-demand games.

#3 - Madiba - this will probably be my go-to place. Not only is it a wonderful South African restaurant, it's also in my n'hood. Oxtail for breakfast? Yes, please.

So, I guess the only thing left to say is.... COME ON, YOU YANKS!!!

Yesterday, the art world lost a true visionary. Louise Bourgeois passed away in New York at the age of 98 this Memorial Day. I was fortunate to see a wonderful retrospective of her work at the Guggenheim in 2008. She created art that expressed the difficulties of her past in a beautiful manner. I could feel the cathartic process as I worked my way through the exhibit. Here is a photo of one of her iconic spider sculptures. I love these spiders because they so succinctly exhibit her extreme feminist views.

I highly recommend the documentary The Spider, The Mistress, and The Tangerine. This movie provides a wonderful explanation of Bourgeois' work, the stories behind her pieces, and a glimpse into the personality of the artist. She was quite the little firecracker! And she will be missed.

This weekend, I got an invite for Pret-a-Surf's launch party at Mollusk Surf Shop in Brooklyn. My lovely designer friend, Caroline, has been doing all the creative for the women's surf line! I definitely fell in love with Pret's surf clothes, as well as this Billyburg space. Mollusk Surf Shop occupies a quiet little corner by the East River which ends up making it a great space for events... I hear the store hosts parties quite often! It looks like a winner. I can't believe 3 day passes sold out without the line-up even being announced! Love me some ATX...and, apparently, other people do too. If I'm able to make it down for the festivities, the following artists (in no specific order) will be at the top of my "to see" list:

1. Spoon - the new album hasn't totally grown on me yet, but maybe I'll like the songs better when I see them performed live.

2. Black Keys - one of my favorite live shows I've ever seen. ever.

3. Local Natives - heard great things about their live shows. I'm a sucker for a good harmony.

4. M.I.A. - more bass than you could ever imagine. And her outfits are always spectacular.

5. Amos Lee - haven't listened to him in a while, but it might be a nice, relaxing break between rock acts.

6. DAWES - love love love their most recent album, but I haven't seen them live yet.

7. Asleep at the Wheel - classic country. I love every time I get to see them because it takes me back to my roots, y'all.

8. The National - love their albums. Matt Berninger has such an insane voice. I would love to hear it in person!

Feeling inspired...

After taking engagement photos this weekend, I'm starting to feel inspired about planning a wedding. Not that I wasn't before - it's all just sort of sinking in now. Here are a few images that will be pushing me to create the ideal aesthetic we are looking for in our wedding. I especially LOVE the teal/peach color palette! Teal has always been a favorite color of mine - and I think peach is a very unexpected accent color. We just need to set a date now!

This last weekend, while scouting locations for our engagement photos, we stopped by Powerhouse Books in DUMBO. They have such a cool, industrial-style space. It would be great if you ever need to throw an event!

While thumbing through the various books, many focusing on NYC and Brooklyn, I decided to purchase a lovely copy of "A Tree Grows In Brooklyn." I've been enjoying it so far - I love reading about what the city was once like and how it used to operate. It seems like an intriguing take on urban living that we can relate to our current experiences, even if they are incredibly different eras.

Digby & Iona is one of my favorite jewelry design companies! They have such statement peices - anything from a compass to a caged sparrow to a 2x4. I thought of D&I because I was pondering what I might wear in our engagement photos in a few weeks... I'm hoping to incorporate this mustache necklace I bought last summer into one of my oh-so-stylish ensembles!

I am also super excited to have Brooke Fitts over at Brookelyn Photography shooting our engagement photos. I just love her work! And I know we are going to have a great time wandering around Brooklyn during the shoot! So, be prepared for lots of photos in a couple weeks...
